As the younger son of a deeply devout Catholic mother, he was steered toward the priesthood practically from childhood. For much of his early years, he embraced that future without much resistance; it felt natural and secure.

Things grew more complicated, however, once he began to acknowledge his attraction to men. Rather than confronting his family with the truth, pursuing a clerical path offered an ideal escape: it allowed him to sidestep disappointing his parents while channeling his energies into something socially acceptable and spiritually elevated.
